how to make one yourself

PART 1……make your own Unicorn Cake Yay!

Delighted to be asked to make a unicorn cake, first I googled the shit out of it for ideas and inspiration and came up wanting……..so I devised my own way. Heres how I ended up with this……

Obviously unicorns are real. Heres a picture of one as proof. And they’re edible. Hence, perhaps, their rarity…….. too delicious!

First to figure out how to make the shape……I decided on two cakes. A square and a circle. I traced the shapes of my cake tins and messed about with paper templates to get the required horsey portrait design. This may look easy but I spent ages dicking about trying to get it just so. A twisty donut was acquired for use as a tasty edible horn. Genius, I thought (thanks for that idea, my old man).Oh & I made this oval cake base from some woody offcuts I had lying about (re-use re-use re-use!) and covered it in gold card, so it was wipe cleanable and food safe. That took quite some fiddling about too.

Chocolate cake was obviously required. My extensive research concluded that unicorn flesh is brown and closest in flavour to chocolate. So that decision was easy. I made two at once, a square and a circle, in accordance with my evil plans…….

So you can see here it is all far from perfect. The cake top is all cracked n stuff. And bumpy. But never fear, we will cover all that up with plenty of sugary stuff and no one will be any the wiser.

Raspberry butter cream for the crumb coat. Lots of butter, loads of icing sugar, and a dash of raspberry reduction. Used here for the under hair flesh tone. This serves to hold the shape together for the decorating overload. Spread all over the cake, top and sides, and chill until firm.

I had intended to use rainbow lolly straps for hair, but they were sold out at the first shop I tried, so I freaked out and bought these stupidly expensive rainbow log things to use, which, being very straight, would never work…….so I heated them gently in the microwave and bent them over me rolling pin and left until they set in shape. Again, this may look simple enough, but took me ages faffing about. Some people call this “fun!”

Then the real “fun” begins……on to the piping and decorating. Using plain buttercream I attempted to create a fluffy, hairy, cuddly look with my piping bag. This didn’t quite come out as I visualised (more practice and experimentation required) but I figure, as per usual, if I just keep sticking more and more shit on a thing you can disguise a certain level of shitness. Wasn’t planning on eyebrows, but then how would unicorns show surprise (and their other many moods), without them? Eyebrows it is! And it makes purchasing those stupidly expensive rainbow lolly sticks worthwhile.

Of course the next shop I went to had the rainbow lolly strips, and they were cheap! So I bought them as well. I figured when it comes to unicorns there cant be too many rainbows. So heres a close up of the unicorn “hair”. My unicorn is fond of the tousled look, theres no time for brushing. I just piled up the rainbows, and held them in place with a little purple coloured butter cream. Plus these little silver stars I came across. Oh and finished with a dusting of gold dust - a food safe glitter containing REAL GOLD I believe…….or LIKE to believe, I dunno.
